Batticaloa

Batticaloa is built around a vast lagoon system that turns much of the city into a series of islands linked by causeways and bridges, giving it a distinct, waterborne character unlike any other Sri Lankan city. Its 17th-century Dutch fort, originally built by the Portuguese in 1628, still functions as an administrative building — one of the few colonial forts on the island still in active government use.

The lagoon itself is central to daily life, from fishing to transport, and evening boat trips across its calm water are a quiet highlight for visitors passing through the east coast.
