Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was the first of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals, founded in the 4th century BCE and continuously inhabited as the island's political and religious center for well over a thousand years before it was abandoned after invasions in the late 10th century CE. What survives today is a vast, still-functioning sacred city — one of the longest-lived urban settlements in the ancient world — spread across a green, tank-dotted landscape studded with the brick stupas, monastery ruins and carved stone platforms that made it a seat of Buddhist learning for the whole region.

Bentota

Bentota sits at the point where the Bentota Ganga, one of the south coast's longest rivers, widens into a lagoon before cutting through a narrow spit of sand to reach the Indian Ocean. That geography — broad, sheltered river on one side and open surf beach on the other, separated by only a few hundred meters — has made it Sri Lanka's most established purpose-built beach resort area since the 1960s, when the government commissioned some of the country's earliest large-scale tourism architecture here.

Ella

Ella sits at roughly 1,050 metres in Sri Lanka's Uva Province, a small hill-country town that grew up around the tea trade the British planters established in the late 19th century. Where Kandy and Nuwara Eliya carry the weight of colonial-era grandeur, Ella has always been more modest — a ridge-top settlement surrounded by working tea estates, its name possibly derived from the Sinhala word for a waterfall, of which the area has several. The cool climate that made it attractive to planters growing Ceylon tea is the same one that now draws travellers escaping the heat of the coast and the Cultural Triangle.

Galle Fort

Galle Fort occupies a rocky headland on Sri Lanka's south coast, its outline still largely the one the Dutch East India Company gave it after taking the site from the Portuguese in 1640. The Portuguese had built the first modest fortifications here decades earlier, but it was the Dutch who expanded the promontory into the granite-and-coral-block ramparts that survive today, enclosing roughly 36 hectares of what became — and remains — a functioning town rather than a museum piece. The British inherited the fort in 1796 and added their own layers, but left the Dutch street grid and much of the civic architecture largely intact.

Kandy

Kandy was the last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka, holding out against Portuguese and Dutch incursions before finally falling to the British in 1815 — a fact that still shapes how the city sees itself. Set around an artificial lake commissioned by the kingdom's final ruler, King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, in 1807, Kandy occupies a bowl of hills at around 500 metres, cooler and greener than the coastal lowlands but without the high-altitude chill of Nuwara Eliya further up the range. Its streets still follow much of their historic layout, radiating from the royal palace complex that once anchored Kandyan political and religious life.

Mirissa

Mirissa is a small fishing town on Sri Lanka's south coast, wrapped around a tight crescent bay where a single rocky headland shelters calm water at one end and open surf breaks at the other. For most of the twentieth century it was a working harbor known mainly for its outrigger fishing fleet, and that fleet still puts out before dawn each morning — the same small jetty now shared by whale-watching boats heading out toward the continental shelf that drops away just a few kilometers offshore.

Nuwara Eliya

British planters built Nuwara Eliya in the mid-19th century as an escape from the coastal heat, and the town still carries the layout and architecture of that intention — half-timbered cottages, a red-roofed post office, a golf course laid out in 1889, and a climate cool enough that it earned the nickname "Little England." At 1,868 metres it sits at the highest elevation of any major town in Sri Lanka, and the temperature drop from Colombo is immediate: evenings call for a jacket, something almost nowhere else on the island requires.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya, or "Lion Rock," is a 5th-century palace and fortress complex built atop a 200-metre granite monolith that rises abruptly from the surrounding jungle plain. King Kashyapa I chose the site around 477 CE, transforming the rock's summit into a royal citadel ringed by elaborate water gardens, boulder gardens and terraced gardens at its base — among the oldest landscaped gardens surviving anywhere in the world.

Trincomalee

Trincomalee's harbor has drawn seafaring powers for over two thousand years — Ptolemy marked it on his 2nd-century map of the ancient world, and it has since been fought over and occupied by Portuguese, Dutch, French and British fleets, each recognising the same advantage: a deep, sheltered, naturally defensible anchorage considered one of the finest in the world. That strategic history left the town with old fortifications and a naval presence that still shapes its character, sitting somewhat apart from the more tourist-oriented coastlines further south.

Yala National Park

Yala National Park spans a swath of dry-zone scrubland, lagoons and coastal forest along Sri Lanka's southeastern coast, and is the country's oldest and most visited wildlife reserve, formally protected since 1938 though hunting restrictions in the area date back to the British era before that. Block I, the roughly 140-square-kilometre section open to the public, sits within a much larger protected complex, most of which remains off-limits to tourism — a buffer that has helped Yala sustain some of the healthiest predator populations on the island despite the crowds its accessible section draws.

A dramatic rock fortress that briefly served as Sri Lanka's capital from 1273 to 1284 under King Bhuvanekabahu I, who moved the sacred Tooth Relic there for safekeeping during a period of regional instability. An ornate stone stairway climbs the rock to ruined palace terraces.
