Rekawa Beach

A quiet beach east of Tangalle, Rekawa is one of Sri Lanka's most important sea turtle nesting sites, where five species — including green, hawksbill and giant leatherback turtles — come ashore nightly to lay eggs. A long-running community conservation project protects the nests and guides evening viewings.

Visits are typically arranged after dark under strict, low-light conditions designed not to disturb nesting turtles, making this a genuinely rare wildlife experience rather than a staged one.
