The road from Kandy up into Sri Lanka's central highlands climbs through a different country entirely — cool air, mist-wrapped ridgelines, and tea bushes planted in contour rows across every slope. This six-day route trades coastal heat for hill-station pace, moving slowly enough to actually live inside the landscape rather than photograph it from a moving car: a night spent on a working tea estate, a train that runs closer to the mountainside than any road could, and mornings cool enough for a proper trek before breakfast.
Pacing is deliberately unhurried. Each base — Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Haputale — gets enough time to settle in, so the famous rail leg between Nanu Oya and Ella is treated as a highlight in its own right rather than a transit day. Expect early starts for the best light and the emptiest platforms, and slow afternoons with little scheduled beyond a walk, a tasting, or a view.
