Sri Lanka's south coast runs from the river mouths and mangroves around Bentota down through Galle's fortified old town to a string of quieter beaches further east — a five-day route that samples each register of coastal Sri Lanka without rushing any of them. It opens on the water rather than the sand, with a traditional outrigger boat gliding through Bentota's mangrove channels before the trip moves into Galle Fort's dense grid of Dutch-era streets, and closes out on the calmer, less developed beaches around Tangalle.
Galle Fort itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site raised by the Portuguese in the 16th century and substantially rebuilt by the Dutch through the 1600s, remains a living neighbourhood rather than a museum piece — ramparts you can walk the full circuit of at sunset, a lighthouse still in operation, and streets lined with boutique shops and cafés inside colonial-era shophouses. The final two nights trade that density for open beach, with Tangalle and the stretch around it offering long, largely empty sand well away from the main resort corridor.
