This four-day loop is built for people who want wildlife front and centre rather than as a single side excursion. It moves between two very different national parks — Yala, dense with scrub jungle and holding one of the highest leopard densities anywhere on earth, and Udawalawe, a more open grassland landscape built around a reservoir where resident elephant herds are almost guaranteed — before finishing on the south coast for a half-day out on the water, tracking the blue whales that pass close to Sri Lanka's continental shelf.
Game drives run in private open-sided 4x4 jeeps rather than shared vehicles, timed for the early morning and late afternoon windows when animals are most active and the light is at its best. Between drives, beachfront stays at Tissamaharama and Mirissa give the trip a change of pace, so the four days alternate between dawn starts in the bush and slow afternoons by the water.
